AVG Rescue CD: Antivirus Review

The AVG Rescue CD provides a portable variation of Grisoft AVG antivirus and antispyware software. The CD is bootable and definition updates can be installed to either the hard drive or a removable USB drive. Coverage is limited to Windows XP and Server 2003. On the plus side, it operates with FAT, FAT32, and NTFS file systems. While the flexibility of the approach is nice, the price - $149.00 - may knock it out of the ballpark for many users. Guide Review - AVG Rescue CD: Antivirus Review

For system admins with several hundred (or more) machines to manage, the AVG Rescue CD offers a convenient way to quickly scan and remediate infected systems. In addition to easily updated AVG antivirus and antispyware software, the bootable CD comes equipped with a wide range of useful utilities, including:
    • Command-line utility
    • Registry editor
    • IP configuration tool
    • Scan disk tool
    • Text editor
    • File manager
    • Network drive mapping utility
While such convenience is nice, it comes at a hefty price - $149 for a year's use. These same utilities can be accessed from the Windows operating system (indeed, many are portable executable (PE) files), or downloaded as freeware from a variety of reputable sources and dropped to a custom-created bootable F-Prot CD, which would cost nothing, save a little elbow grease.
