Security software is a viable means of warding off bugs, Trojans, and worms without having to take your computer to the shop each time it gets infected. Many antivirus companies release updates each year, adding even more protection factors to their software bundles. Learn how to pick the right antivirus product to match your PC's needs.

Step 1:
Determine if you already have security software installed on your PC. Many times, you can upgrade to the 2008 version by simply downloading some files or having a new CD-rom sent to you. Call your security software provider or contact customer service via email.

Step 2:
Know your PC. A huge step to take in choosing the right security software product is knowing what hardware versions work with which antivirus products. Do a little research online to see which products host software for your individual PC.

Step 3:
Save money by going for a product offering a 2-3 user license. This allows your family members to utilize the software on their PC's as well.

Step 4:
Choose a product that includes anti-spyware or anti-spam features to increase protection. There are fully comprehensive software products out these days and you don't have to limit yourself to mere antivirus programs.

Step 5:
Scour PCMag online if you're having trouble choosing between some of the top names like Norton and McAfee. You'll get a basic idea of what customers liked and what they didn't about the products.

Step 6:
Consider your individual needs. If usability and easy installation is most important to you, go for a simplistic, user-friendly software product as opposed to one with multiple features.
